I am so proud to be a professional member of the creative community, having the opportunity to work on a number of large scale murals and public art. This summer I had the absolute privilege of working as a primary mural assistant on two separate murals. It was a week of extremes - working with unbelievable talent on exciting murals. My adventures during UpHere 2016:
Assisted world renowned muralists Ella+Pitr from France - who have created highly visible and huge (in scale and message) murals around the world. They were the most approachable and kind artists I have ever worked with, and I am so grateful to have been able to experience their process and huge talent.
We met them at the airport, and I pretty much immediately realized that my french left much to be desired. But they spoke english very well, as I stumbled through my french, and I was able to spend time with them, both on the mural and outside of the project. They are lovely people, and so humble, considering how talented and prolific level of their work. I worked with them to create the Science North rooftop mural. It was a strange surface, and upon initial inspection, I was very curious to see how they would manage to create their illustration on the rough terrain. I was incredibly impressed by their methods, and learned so much from their process. The easy, relaxed manner in which they worked seemed to oppose the speed and efficiency of their execution. It was amazing to watch the transformation, and the cooperation in their artistic relationship. It was a beautiful experience, and I appreciate that I am one of the few who have seen it in person. Even though it is so close to us all, and we aren't able to see it everyday, just knowing it's there warms my heart.
An exceptional talent, Tracy is one of the most creative and innovative thinkers I have ever met. I was so happy that I was able to assist her in a mural for Memorial Park, in downtown Sudbury. Her whimsical characters and perfect colour combinations created a sense of rejuvenation and friendliness in a place where people go to enjoy the park. Tracy is consistent in her style, creating playful settings and imaginative illustrations and characters. Working on this mural, I was very impressed by her design - the thoughtfulness in developing each element, the incorporation of the external elements such as the bushes in front of the wall, and the compositional consideration of the odd shaped wall. She is a brilliant thinker and visual strategist - it was an honour to work with her on a mural that has made a beautiful mark on the community.
I am so thankful to have been involved in UpHere as an assistant. I am grateful to Christian and Alex for choosing me to work with these talented artists. Can't wait for UpHere 2017!
